The Couture Pursuit
Inspired by Maria Grazia Chiuri’s beautiful yet quiet couture pieces for Dior, I made this midi length dress in skin-toned satin and organza. As I reflected on the piece, I would describe it as feminine, peaceful and private. Dior has definitely inspired me to create pieces which make a statement through its subtlety or ‘hidden’ craftmanship, as Maria said, “Couture is about something hidden.”
It is like a breath of fresh air to see a couture collection that is subtle, showcasing a high-end craftmanship, one that sets it apart from sparkly, heavily beaded couture pieces. Maria Grazia Chiuri’s collections for Dior Couture has perfectly reflected the fine, ‘hidden’ craftmaship, and collections that embodied both femininity and empowerment.
Inspired to create a couture piece that is peaceful, private, feminine and making a statement in a subtle way, I made this dress, which I ended up wearing to a friend’s wedding. This dress was made of a corset bodice with horizontal organza ruching, and a full skirt with flounces at the bottom. It took me about 5-6 hours every night after work for 10 days straight to make this dress, from the pattern making, testing to the final product.
The beautiful nude/skin-toned semi-translucent outer fabric was silk organza from SilkWorld. The inner corset and inner skirt were made of silky smooth 100% silk satin. I love the neutral skin toned palette, I wasn’t bored of this nude tone after hours of sewing up this piece. Lastly, a custom-made belt, by ButtonMania, added the final perfect touch to the dress.
In this shoot, I attempted to showcase the femininity, peaceful, quiet and dreamy feel of the dress. I worked with my friend Lena, a talented photographer at L Photography to create the images. We went to this beautiful location Cairn Beach, Victoria to shoot this editorial style images. Keep Scrolling to see the details and don’t forget to let me know what you think.
